McKinsey Solve Game Overview
Everything you need to know about McKinsey's digital assessment — what it is, how it works, and how to prepare for success.
What is the McKinsey Solve Game?
The McKinsey Problem Solving Game (often called "Solve," "McKinsey Digital Assessment," or "Imbellus Game") is an online assessment used by McKinsey & Company to evaluate candidates applying for consulting positions. Introduced in 2017 and developed by Imbellus, it replaced the traditional written Problem Solving Test (PST) in many regions.
Unlike traditional aptitude tests, the Solve Game uses interactive, game-based scenarios to assess your cognitive abilities. This approach allows McKinsey to evaluate not just whether you arrive at correct answers, but how you think through problems — your decision-making process, adaptability, and efficiency under time pressure.
The assessment is typically taken after your initial application is reviewed and before the interview rounds. A strong Solve Game performance is essential for progressing to the interview stage.
Current Solve Game Scenarios
Seawolf (Ocean Cleanup)
In this scenario, you're tasked with cleaning contaminated ocean sites using microbes. You must analyze microbe characteristics, select the optimal combination that meets treatment requirements, and manage multiple sites under time pressure.
Redrock Island
This scenario involves analyzing an ecosystem on Redrock Island. You'll work through four phases — Investigation, Analysis, Report, and Cases — to evaluate data, identify patterns, and make recommendations about ecosystem management.
Where Does Solve Fit in the Recruitment Process?
The Solve Game typically comes after initial resume screening and before interview rounds. It's a critical filter — only candidates who perform well advance to interviews.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the McKinsey Problem Solving Game?
The McKinsey Problem Solving Game (also called "Solve" or the McKinsey Digital Assessment) is a gamified online assessment that McKinsey uses to evaluate candidates' problem-solving abilities. It replaced the traditional written PST (Problem Solving Test) and uses interactive game scenarios to assess cognitive skills.
What games are included in the Solve assessment?
The current Solve Game includes multiple scenarios. The most common are Seawolf (Ocean Cleanup) - a microbe optimization game, and Redrock Island - a data analysis and ecosystem case study. Candidates typically receive two of these scenarios during their assessment.
How long does the McKinsey Solve Game take?
The entire assessment typically takes 60-70 minutes to complete. Each game scenario is timed individually, usually around 25-35 minutes per game. You'll need to complete your scenarios in one sitting.
What skills does the Solve Game test?
The Solve Game evaluates critical thinking, problem-solving under pressure, data interpretation, pattern recognition, and decision-making abilities. Unlike traditional tests, it measures how you approach problems, not just whether you get the "right" answer.
Can I practice for the McKinsey Solve Game?
Yes! While McKinsey doesn't provide practice versions, platforms like ours offer realistic simulators that replicate the game mechanics and difficulty. Practice helps you understand the interface, manage time effectively, and develop winning strategies.
